7 fun facts about PEI, with stock footage clips to match:
1. Royal Counties and Rural landscapes.
While geographically speaking it is the smallest province in Canada, PEI is also the most densely populated. Prince Edward Island is split up into three counties with some very regal names: Prince, Queens, and Kings. PEI is also known for its beautiful rural landscapes like this one.

2. PEI Potatoes
Approximately 25% of all of the potatoes grown in Canada come from Prince Edward Island. Here’s a PEI field that shows the typically red soil in which PEI potatoes grow.
3. Lobsters.
Surrounded by the waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, seafood is a staple on Prince Edward Island. PEI is famous for its mussels, oysters and lobsters. If you're fishing for lobster, you should know that the province has TWO lobster fishing seasons. The spring season runs from May to June while the fall season runs from mid-August to mid-October. PEI lobsters are caught in traps like these:

4. Confederation Bridge is one, big bridge.
Confederation Bridge was completed in 1997 and links Prince Edward Island to the mainland province of New Brunswick. At 12.9 km or 8 miles long, it is the longest bridge in Canada (and the longest bridge in the world over ice covered waters). Our favourite alternate name for the bridge is the ’Span of Green Gables’. It was coined by the former President of Ireland, Mary McAleese during a state visit to Canada in 1998.

5. The Birthplace of Confederation.
Charlottetown is the capital of PEI, and is considered to be the Birthplace of Confederation. In 2014, the city celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference – an event that paved the way to Confederation and the founding of Canada in 1867.

6. Red soil.
As you travel around the island you’ll keep noticing that the rocks, the sand and the soil are all coloured an interesting shade of red. This is due to high levels of iron-oxide in the earth, ie. ‘rust’! You can even get t-shirts that have been stained orange with PEI soil. A great souvenir to take home and remind you of the rusty coloured landscape. Be sure to read washing instructions though, you may have to wash separately.

7. Beautiful Beaches
Continuing with the red soil theme, the beaches in PEI also feature amazing red rocks and sand. Not only are the beaches beautiful, but they’re also abundant with over 90 of them on the island.
